Key Details About Fire Dampers

Fire dampers are essential passive safety devices integrated into building ventilation systems to halt the movement of flames and smoke during an emergency. These components typically utilise thermal triggers or electrical signals to close off ductwork, ensuring that fire remains contained within specific compartments. Recent industry warnings emphasise that improper installation, such as the use of non-melting screws, can prevent these shutters from deploying and jeopardise building integrity. Consequently, experts stress the necessity of annual inspections and professional maintenance to remain compliant with safety regulations. Technical updates now provide enhanced guidance for contractors to identify and fix these critical installation defects. Companies like Siren Fire offer specialised testing and certification to ensure these systems function reliably to protect occupants and property.

Our certified team delivers:

  • Visual inspection and operational testing

  • Smoke and heat sensor checks

  • Damper condition assessment

  • Cleaning, lubrication, and seal replacement if needed

  • Minor repairs onsite

  • Comprehensive maintenance report and certification

Pricing:

  • Up to 10 dampers: £500

  • Over 10 dampers: £35 per damper

We ensure your fire dampers function reliably, helping to contain fire and smoke in emergencies.

fire risk assessment in london

A fire damper is a safety device designed to close automatically when it detects a rise in temperature. This is usually activated by a thermal element, such as a fusible link, which melts at a specific temperature, allowing internal springs to shut the damper blades. By blocking the duct, these devices help maintain building integrity and buy valuable time for a safe evacuation.

In the UK, fire dampers must meet strict safety regulations and standards, such as BS 9999. Whether you are looking for hvc fire dampers for commercial systems or specialised round fire dampers for circular ducting, professional installation and maintenance are non-negotiable.

Depending on your building’s design and HVAC requirements, several types of dampers may be utilised:

  • Curtain Fire Dampers: These mechanical dampers often use steel shutters that drop to obstruct the cross-sectional area of a duct during a fire.
  • Motorised Smoke Fire Dampers: These advanced units can be closed following an electrical signal from a fire alarm system. They utilise fail-safe rotary actuators and are essential for preventing the spread of both fire and toxic smoke throughout a facility.
  • Intumescent Dampers: Unlike mechanical versions, these use a physical/chemical reaction where the material swells shut when exposed to heat. They are often available as round fire dampers for specific pipe or duct inserts.

Air Transfer Dampers: These are used in walls, floors, or doors where ductwork is not present, ensuring fire resistance while allowing for natural air transfer.

The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) recently issued a critical safety warning regarding fire dampers in the UK. Inspections revealed that a “huge number” of dampers had been installed incorrectly, specifically using self-drilling ‘tek’ screws.

These screws do not melt during a fire, meaning spring-loaded dampers may fail to release and close, rendering the fire-stopping measure useless. Dampers must be secured by fusible fixings that allow the duct to break away if it collapses; otherwise, the weight of the falling duct could pull the damper out of its seat and break the fire seal.

In case of a fire, stay calm and evacuate immediately. Use the closest exit and follow your evacuation plan. Call emergency services from a safe location. Never return until it’s declared safe to do so.
